Consistency and trust: the Roto-Cart production model

, da al , Stand

Roto–Cart is an Italian manufacturer of toilet paper and kitchen towels. Inside its plant in the province of Treviso, they only use Gambini lines: one professional and three consumer lines, all equipped with the TouchMax embossing machine. This investment clearly demonstrates the company’s guiding principles: Giuliano Gelain, CEO, explains them in detail.

How did the idea of purchasing four lines all at once come about?

Within a single plant I think it’s important to have consistent machines, in order to simplify spare parts management, maintenance and overall organization.
We had already collaborated in the past on a line rebuild, so our trust in Gambini was already solid. So, in 2015 the choice was a natural one, driven primarily by technology: each line integrates a TouchMax, Gambini’s embossing device that allows quick and safe roll changes.

What was your main production need at the time of the investment?

The main requirement was to streamline our production. We had multiple plants and machines of varying ages: the goal was to concentrate everything in a single production site, replacing outdated machines with new, high-performance lines.
Another key aspect was embossing management. Each brand must have its own visual identity: in fact, we developed a series of dedicated cylinders and designs to make product changes easier, while maintaining consistency between the line and the brand.

How does TouchMax support you in your production?

The TouchMax’ quick roll change is a major advantage in terms of flexibility: it reduces machine downtime and allows easier management of different products and brands, by varying the embossing pattern.

For us, embossing is a key aspect; each brand must have its own visual identity.

What kind of products do you manufacture?

We produce toilet paper, kitchen towels and products for the industrial sector. Our distinctive feature is that all our embossing patterns are developed in-house: we do not use standard designs, nor we commission them from outside; instead, we create exclusive textures ourselves.
Our embossing patterns aren’t made of little flowers or childish decorations. We prefer continuous, neutral – yet recognizable – textures that convey softness and visual quality, without being invasive.
Developing a new embossing pattern takes time, sometimes even more than a year, because when you do something truly new, you’re the first to create something: there are no precedents, so there are no certainties either. We work on graphics, points, thickness and the final result across multiple plies, seeking the right balance between aesthetics, softness and strength.
Tissue products are not and cannot be tied to passing trends; our goal is to create a product that works today and will continue to work also tomorrow.

What improvements have you seen since the arrival of Gambini’s technology?

The improvement over previous machines is evident; there has been a true generational leap.

The main advantage is the greater flexibility and uniformity between the lines, as well as the continuity afforded by the TouchMax.
When the order was placed, I remember that we were in constant contact with Gambini, almost daily, at certain stages. Collaboration and mutual trust were crucial to achieving the desired result.

How important is a relationship of trust?

An investment like this is worth millions of euros: without trust, you can’t even get started!
When you choose a partner, you do so with the understanding that, to achieve satisfaction, you must overcome challenges together, being able to count on real support over time.

Is there a particularly distinctive aspect of the collaboration with Gambini?

What made the difference was the ability to always provide responses, especially regarding electronics and complex technical issues.
Over time, a living, dynamic relationship was born: together we grow, address critical issues and develop solutions.

How is this investment perceived by your customers?

The end customer perceives the result in the product. I have always focused on real quality, not just appearance.
In recent years, the market has gone towards reducing quality, in order to lower costs. I, however, continue to believe that consumers must be respected: if I have set a certain standard for them over the last twenty years, I must maintain it or even improve it.
Technology must serve to improve softness, strength and performance, not to degrade the product. Our goal is to engage the consumer over time, through consistency and reliability.

What are the main challenges and opportunities you see for Roto-Cart’s future?

The market changes year after year and is increasingly competitive. Many focus on volume and price; we strive to stay ahead of the market, launching new challenges and maintaining distinctive quality.
The challenge is to resist the race to the bottom, especially in industrial products. And this can only be achieved by building a stable relationship with the customer, based on trust and consistent quality.
Our goal is to offer a product that provides security, peace of mind and continuity over time. We don’t want to chase trends, but rather create lasting value.
